Sony launches Xperia XZ1 and XZ1 Compact with 3D-scanning function

Sony has just announced the Xperia XZ1 and XZ1 Compact smartphone models, both of which take over many of the camera specifications of the flagship Xperia XZ Premium that was announced earlier this year at MWC.

The Xperia XZ1 comes with a 5.2“ Full HD HDR display, Snapdragon 835 chipset, 4GB RAM and 64GB of expandable storage. The 2,700 mAh battery and other components are packed into a water and dust proof (IP65/68) aluminum unibody design that features Gorilla Glass in front of the display.

With a 19MP 1/2.3" sensor and F2.0 aperture, the phones' camera specifications are identical to the Premium model. The XZ1 also features the XZ Premium's headline feature, a slow-motion mode that can record 960fps footage at 720p for a fraction of a second. But more interestingly, the XA1 adds a new 3D-scanning feature that allows for 180 or 360 degree 3D-scanning of faces or objects within just one minute. The results can be used for online avatars, AR-effects or 3D wallpapers, but exportable obj-files also allow for 3D-printing of your scan results.

The 13MP front camera now comes with a display flash function to catch up with most competitors in this respect.

The XZ1 Compact packs most of the larger model's features and specifications into a more compact plastic body with a 4.6" Full HD display. XZ1 Compact users will also have to make do with a lower res 8MP front camera and only 32GB of built-in storage.

Both models will be among the first to launch with the latest Android version 8.0 Oreo. In Europe, the Xperia XZ1 will set you back 700 Euros (approximately $830), the Compact model will cost you 600 Euros (approximately $710). No US-pricing has been released just yet.
