2018 Pingyao International Photography Festival opens

The 2018 Pingyao International Photography Festival, with the theme of “Crowd-Innovation and Sharing”, opened on September 19th. This year, Pingyao International Photography Festival ushered in its 18th anniversary. Over the past 17 years, Pingyao International Photography Festival has been keeping abreast of the times, and has become an international brand of fame, influence and authority both at home and abroad, as well as a shining business card of China dedicated with people's hard work and wisdom.

At the openning ceremony, Lian Yimin, member of the Standing Committee of the Shanxi CPC and Minister of Publicity Department, Wang Chen, Vice Chairman of the China Photographers Society, Ding Wenjiang, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Professor of Shanghai Jiaotong University, Wang Cheng, Secretary of the CPC Jinzhong Municipal Committee, Yang Maolin, Deputy Director of Shanxi Provincial Party Committee Publicity Department, Feng Jianping, Director of the Jinzhong Municipal People's Congress Standing Committee, Zhao Qinghua, Chairman of the Jinzhong Municipal People's Political Consultative Conference, and Shi Yong, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Pingyao County Committee and County Chief, jointly launched the opening ceremony of the 2018 China Pingyao International Photography Festival. Wang Cheng, Secretary of the CPC Jinzhong Municipal Committee, announced the theme of the 2019 Pingyao International Photography Festival - "Happiness and Struggle."

This year's exhibition is unprecedented, with 3,223 photographers from 35 countries and regions attending, including China, Russia, USA, UK, Germany, France, Australia, Cuba, India, Singapore, etc. It consists of 49 foreign exhibitions, with 262 artists and 1762 works. American contemporary photographer Neal Slavin appeared in Pingyao and exhibited his works for the first time in China. He has been engaged in portrait photography for more than 40 years and has taken portraits for former US President Bill Clinton and famous director Spielberg. He has a very high attainment in group photography. In addition, one of the world's most famous photographers, Magnum's key member Martin Parr and 12 of Britain's most important and influential photographers also attended the exhibition; France's famous curator Dominique Charlet is featured in a group exhibiton with works of photographers from five nations; the famous German curator Thomas Kellner once again presented the rigor of German photography with still life photos; Cuban photographers and their works are worthy of attention in this year's exhibition, especially the work of the late Cuban photographer, Jose Manuel Acosta, the pioneer of world modern photography.

In the domestic exhibition section, the 18th Pingyao International Photography Festival pays tribute to An Ge. As an important figure of Chinese photography in the 1980s, An Ge has photographed thousands of precious negatives in decades, recording Chinese folk life as well as the rapidly changing era of reform and opening up with folk standpoint. Having photographed a large number of group photos with the characteristics of the times, he isable to become an important image recorder of the development of Chinese society in the Deng Xiaoping era. Both An Ge and Neal Slavin have a large number of group photo works, and this convergence will become a story in the history of Chinese and Western cultural exchanges in Pingyao.

The exhibitions of colleges and universities have always been an important unit, with more than 100 schools attending, 18 from foreign countries and 84 from China. The works introduce a new generation of photographers.

It is particularly worth mentioning that this year Pingyao plans to work with international photography agencies to improve the quality of its exhibition. It has reached a cooperation agreement with Global Photography to share their resources. Global Photography will establish a bilingual website of the Pingyao International Photography Festival, so that the event will obtain a global exposure, and photographers who cannot attend the festival can also have an online access to the event.

"Achieving greatness" are the key words constantly mentioned in 2018, and where the dream of Pingyao International Photography Festival lies. Only by persisting and continuing to inherit and innovate can we achieve the greatness of a cultural undertaking. In the past 18 years, Pingyao International Photography Festival has been insisting on its originality, and has now ranked first in many areas: the first large-scale photography art exhibition in China; the first photography exhibition held in the World Cultural Heritage Site; the first photo festival that proposes the "Curator System"; the first to set up a "tribute exhibition" to fully present the creative process of Chinese photographers... Today, internationalization, specialization, and diversification have become the core values of Pingyao International Photography Festival. It is becoming the most widely-watched image display platform, and attracting photographers from all over the world with its unique charm.
