The exhibition focuses on the works of the series ”Hyper“ which follows his personal exhibition of the series ”La chute“ that we had organized last year in Shanghai Collected by the Pompidou Art Centre, the Maison Europeenne de la Photographie (MEP), etc., Denis Darzacq is supported by the French institutions. In 2007 he has received the 1st prize of World Press Photo (WPP). Denis Darzacq is exhibited internationally since 20 years. He is known to develop a strict artistic proposal that the meaning of an image is questioned, and the relationship between photo and subject plays a role very important in each series of his work.
In Hyper, Denis Darzacq photographs young street dancers performing jumps and leaps in the hypermarkets of Rouen, Paris and Chalon-sur-Saône. In these images, the ecstatic and ultimately purposeless movements of these dancing bodies disrupt the disciplined spatial and kinetic order of the supermarket, jamming the routes traced by and for consuming subjects. These are movements for the sake – and pleasure – of movement. As Paul Valéry said in his study of dance, such movements oppose utility and resist subjection to economic conditions: they are their own end.
The elastic vibrancy of the dancers bodies is juxtaposed with the orderly shelves and neatly stacked tins; their freedom with the purposive, consuming mobilities sanctioned by the space of the supermarket; their ecstatic, living bodies with the fake, fluorescent, plastic objects on sale.
