The series is about Sezer with “Spina Bifida” anomaly and cannot use his legs. The boy, who was born in 2002, has undergone five operations by reason of his anomalies in thirteen years, and is attending to sixth class and a studious student. Sezer can sustain his basic living activities like bathing, clothing, peeing with the help of his parents. His mother has transported him by carrying on her shoulders until a wheel chair has been presented.

Leyla met Sezer and his family eight years ago when Sezer was a student at school where she worked. Sezer’s family was willing to send Sezer to school and that impressed Leyla very much. So in support of Sezer and her lovely family, Leyla decided to use her camera to share glimpses into Sezer’s life, as well as children with disabilities at large, that the love they live with, challenging stereotypes that their life is limited by disabilities.

“I can't get out of my mind the photos that Sezer is trying to do sports. He wants to play basketball in Paralympics when he will grow up. It really impressed me a lot.” Leyla says in an interview with Global Photography. Sezer’s passion for sports shows that the barriers which children with disabilities have to overcome are not as big as the barriers society puts in their way.

Parenting a child with special healthcare needs is never an easy task, because parenting is not easy. There are hard days and hard moments, but those do not define life. What really matters is love. In Leyla’s photos, there is happiness. There is the pride parent feels for her kid. There is the joy of even the tiniest milestones. And always the unending love.

Leyla has been constantly working to be a powerful voice for increasing awareness of spina bifida. She hopes in the future when people see children with spina bifida, they can see the love and hope they live with, rather than feeling sorry or questioning how hard their life might be.
