2016 World Press Photo Contest

How to Enter:

Only entries uploaded and submitted via the entry website (https://submit.worldpressphoto.org/) will be accepted.


Eligibility:

The contest is open to professional photographers and photojournalists, and entry coordinators submitting work on their behalf.


Timeline:

The registration deadline is Thursday, January 7, 2016 at 12:00 (noon) CET.

The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at 12:00 (noon) CET.


Categories:

General News

Single pictures (GN) or stories (GNS) reporting on news topics and their aftermaths.

All single pictures and stories must have been shot in 2015.

Story entries will contain between 2 and 8 pictures.

All pictures (single pictures and pictures within stories) will be eligible for the World Press Photo of the Year award.

Spot News

Single pictures (SN) or stories (SNS) witnessing news moments or immediate events.

All single pictures and stories must have been shot in 2015.

Story entries will contain between 2 and 8 pictures.

All pictures (single pictures and pictures within stories) will be eligible for the World Press Photo of the Year award.

Sports

Single pictures (SP) or stories (SPS) that capture individual or team sports.

All single pictures and stories must have been shot in 2015.

Story entries will contain between 2 and 8 pictures.

All pictures (single pictures and pictures within stories) will be eligible for the World Press Photo of the Year award.

Contemporary Issues

Single pictures (CI) or stories (CIS) documenting cultural, economic, environmental, political or social issues.

All single pictures must have been shot in 2015.

Story entries will contain between 2 and 8 pictures. All story pictures must have been shot in 2014 or 2015. At least one picture in a story must have been shot in 2015 or first published in 2015.

All pictures shot in 2015 will be eligible for the World Press Photo of the Year award.

Daily Life

Single pictures (DL) or stories (DLS) documenting either the ordinary or extraordinary in everyday life.

All single pictures must have been shot in 2015.

Story entries will contain between 2 and 8 pictures. All story pictures must have been shot in 2014 or 2015. At least one picture in a story must have been shot in 2015 or first published in 2015.

All pictures shot in 2015 will be eligible for the World Press Photo of the Year award.

People

Single pictures (PO) or stories (POS) portraying individuals or groups of people.

All single pictures must have been shot in 2015.

Story entries will contain between 2 and 8 pictures. All story pictures must have been shot in 2014 or 2015. At least one picture in a story must have been shot in 2015 or first published in 2015.

All pictures shot in 2015 will be eligible for the World Press Photo of the Year award.

Nature

Single pictures (NA) or stories (NAS) of flora, fauna, or landscapes.

All single pictures must have been shot in 2015.

Story entries will contain between 2 and 8 pictures. All story pictures must have been shot in 2014 or 2015. At least one picture in a story must have been shot in 2015 or first published in 2015.

All pictures shot in 2015 will be eligible for the World Press Photo of the Year award.

Long-Term Projects - Individual

A project on a single theme that has been shot by an individual photographer over at least three different years.

Entries will contain between 24 and 30 pictures. It must contain pictures from at least three different years, and a minimum of four pictures must have been shot in 2015. Entries in this category will only be judged as a body of work and single pictures cannot be moved to another category. Single pictures are not eligible for the World Press Photo of the Year award.

Long-Term Projects - Group

A project on a single theme that has been shot by two or more photographers over at least three different years.

Entries will contain between 24 and 30 pictures. It must contain pictures from at least three different years, and a minimum of four pictures must have been shot in 2015. Entries in this category will only be judged as a body of work and single pictures cannot be moved to another category. Single pictures are not eligible for the World Press Photo of the Year award.


Requirements:

1. Pictures must meet the following specifications:

Must be uploaded in .jpeg/.jpg format

Should be saved with a medium to high quality.

Should have an embedded ICC profile. Adobe RGB or sRGB is recommended for color pictures, Gamma 2.2 for black and white. No CMYK.

2. All pictures must have accurate captions, written in English only, and contain all the information described in the guidance on captions.

3. Only single exposure and single frame pictures will be accepted. The following are not accepted:

Multiple exposures, polyptychs (diptychs, triptychs, and so forth)

Stitched panoramas, either produced in-camera or with image editing software.

4. The content of a picture can not be altered by adding, rearranging, reversing, distorting or removing people and/or objects from within the frame. There are two exceptions:

(i) Cropping that removes extraneous details is permitted;

(ii) Sensor dust or scratches on scans of negatives can be removed.

5. Adjustments of color or conversion to grayscale that do not alter content are permitted, with two exceptions:

(i) Changes in color may not result in significant changes in hue, to such an extent that the processed colors diverge from the original colors.

(ii) Changes in density, contrast, color and/or saturation levels that alter content by obscuring or eliminating backgrounds, and/or objects or people in the background of the picture, are not permitted.

6. Entrants whose work has been excluded for altering content in any two contests (from, and including, the 2016 Contest) will be prevented from entering the contest for five years after the second exclusion.
